Physical and occupational therapists are trained in a comprehensive approach to factors affecting your ability to stay at home, safely. Starting with a home safety assessment, your therapist will lead you through potential areas of concern, then take your individual factors (like balance, strength, vision, and memory) and develop a plan that meets your goals. Slips, trips and falls are a leading cause for injury and may lead to being transitioned out of the home. Is your home ready? Are you at risk for falls?
Your therapist will work with you to design a plan that will help you be safer and more confident in your home.
Lymphedema is the buildup of fluid in the soft tissues of the body when lymph vessels are damaged or blocked and causes swelling. Without treatment of lymphedema, it is likely that swelling will not improve and may get worse. Furthermore, understanding your body and making a plan that is specific to your body, lifestyle, and abilities is key to managing this condition. There is no cure for lymphedema, however, learning how to manage it on a daily basis can greatly reduce swelling and make daily care more feasible. Unlike the veins and arteries, the lymphatic system does not have a central pump like the heart so it relies on these self-care strategies to bring fluid back to the heart. This includes using your muscles, manual stimulation of the lymphatic system, gravity, and external pressure (i.e. compression, air pressure, or water pressure) to help it move out of the tissues, into the vessels, and back into the heart. See the lymphatic services page for more information. Contact Nicole today if you would like lymphedema therapy from the comfort of your home or in clinic.
