Lymphedema is the buildup of fluid in the soft tissues of the body when lymph vessels are damaged or blocked and causes swelling. Usually lymphedema occurs in the arms or legs, but can also occur in the trunk, head or neck. Although lymphedema is a lifelong condition, it CAN be managed so you can get back to living life. Contact Nicole today if you would like lymphedema therapy from the comfort of your home.
The most effective treatment for lymphedema is using Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) from a certified lymphedema therapist. CDT consists of careful skin care, specific compression bandaging and/or garments, exercises and a manual lymph drainage routine. There is an intensive phase which involves frequent visits from your therapist, and a maintenance phase which is daily management routine.
MLD is a gentle massage technique that involves lightly stretching the skin to stimulate lymphatic drainage from swollen areas to non-swollen areas. It can be performed as part of complete decongestive therapy or alone depending on your needs.
There are many different types, brands, strengths and sizes of compression and knowing what would be best for your body can be tough. Your therapist can perform an assessment, take measurements and provide recommendations based on your needs. Ideally, you should be fitted after receiving lymphedema treatment so you can maintain your smallest size instead of your biggest size. We are not a supplier, however, so after finding something that would work best, you will need to order online (see our equipment page) or a local company such as Just Like a Woman . We recommend you contact your insurance company to determine if compression garments are covered and for any diagnosis you have.
Physical and occupational therapists are trained in a comprehensive approach to factors affecting your ability to stay at home, safely. Starting with a home safety assessment, your therapist will lead you through potential areas of concern, then take your individual factors (like balance, strength, vision, and memory) and develop a plan that meets your goals. Slips, trips and falls are a leading cause for injury and may lead to being transitioned out of the home. Is your home ready? Are you at risk for falls?
Your therapist will work with you to design a plan that will help you be safer and more confident in your home.
